A product page can only say so much in stills. Video is where the thing moves, opens, folds, fits in a hand and turns out to be the size you thought it was. It is also where a lot of budget disappears into a two minute brand film that nobody watches to the end.
The short version. Most catalogues need three short videos per product rather than one long one: how it works, what it looks like in use, and what turns up in the box. Anything under thirty seconds, silent-readable, and cropped for where it plays. Filming wins for soft goods, food and anything with people in it. 3D wins when the product does not exist yet, when it has to be cut open, or when you need the same clip in eight colours.
Worth knowing before you budget. Wyzowl reports that 85 percent of people say a video has convinced them to buy something, and 96 percent have watched an explainer video to understand a product. On the other side of the transaction, the National Retail Federation expects 19.3 percent of online sales to be returned in 2025, and a clip that shows scale and mechanism honestly is one of the cheapest ways to keep an order from coming back.

What video actually does on a product page
Three jobs, and they are worth naming because a video that does none of them is decoration.
It answers what a photo cannot. Mechanisms, folding, assembly, how the drawer runs, how the lid seals, how the fabric moves. Every one of those is a question that otherwise arrives as a pre sale email or a return.
It gives scale. A product in a hand or in a room settles the size question faster than a dimension diagram.
It holds attention. A short loop keeps people on the page long enough to read the rest of it, which is the part that actually sells.
What video does not do is rescue a product page with weak photography. It is a layer on top of a working gallery, not a substitute for one.
The formats worth making

The common mistake is making one two minute film and cutting nothing out of it. Three short clips built for three different questions will outperform it everywhere, and they cost less to produce because none of them needs a story.

The honest summary. If the product is physical, available and photographs well, a good videographer is the cheaper route for one clip. The moment you need variants, internals, a product still in development, or the same asset feeding renders and AR as well, 3D stops being the expensive option. Where it plays, and what each placement needs
One master edit, several cuts. Deciding the placements before production is what stops you paying twice.

Two rules that apply everywhere. Assume the sound is off, because it usually is. And put the product in the first frame, because a logo intro spends the only two seconds you were given.

Two things move the number more than anything else. Length, because animation is priced by the second and a thirty second clip is genuinely five times a six second one. And whether a model of the product already exists, since that is the part that gets reused by every other output afterwards.
How to brief one
- Name the one question the video has to answer. If there are three, that is three videos.
- Say where it will play and in which crops. This decides framing before anything is built.
- Send the product, or CAD files and dimensions if it is not manufactured yet, plus real material references.
- Agree the length up front. Seconds are the unit of cost.
- Give two or three references you like and one you do not, with a line on why.
- Confirm who signs off, and at which stage. Storyboard changes are cheap, changes after the final render are not.

Mistakes that waste the budget
- A logo intro. Two seconds of brand animation before anyone has seen the product.
- Length for its own sake. Ninety seconds where twenty would have answered the question.
- Music carrying the meaning, on a page where sound is muted by default.
- One horizontal master and no vertical cut, so the ad team crops it badly later.
- A video that shows a variant the customer cannot actually order.
- Text too small to read on a phone, which is where most of it gets watched.
- Leaving the video off the product page entirely and posting it only to social.
